Perspectives on Biography

Key Points on Auto/Biography

·       Scope, Content, Structure:  A biography is usually a book and that’s what we prefer to do. But books vary a lot. Some are long and some are short and even the way the content is structured can be quite different from project to project. For example, you could emphasize photos or not have any at all. Also, we could supplement the basic text with a website that includes photos, graphics, and videos. There are lots of possibilities:  PFW will do it your way.
·       Never Boring:  If you want a biography that begins, “Joe was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania on June 30, 1963…” we’ll likely protest on behalf of your prospective readers. A biography isn’t a chronology, it’s a study of individual character in the context of  personalities, places, and time. So, it shouldn’t be “Joe built the law firm from two partners to twenty over his career…” That’s nice to know, but for something that important the reader will want to learn things like “why” and “how.” We encourage a lively, informal style of writing. You should want more than just having your book listed on Amazon. You should expect that it will actually be purchased by people who will enjoy reading it. With respect to this last point, remember that humor is good; having fun is a key part of life.
